Direct Payments: deductions of charges at source

Sheffield City Council are now deducting charges, at source, for people receiving Direct Payments. Concerns have been raised that this may cause difficulties for some individuals, and ILS wants to monitor this. If anyone is experiencing financial problems as a result of this initiative, we would like to hear from you. You can either email us, call us or write to us (go to the 'Contact us' link on the toolbar at the top of this page for all our contact details).

January 2007: Lottery funding for the Sympsons Project ... Inclusive Living Sheffield (ILS) has won a 3-year grant from the Big Lottery Fund for its Sympsons project. The grant is worth over £168,000.

Sympsons (its full name is Sheffield Youth Mentoring and Personal Support Scheme) has been designed with and for disabled children and young people in Sheffield. It targets disabled youngsters with the highest support needs, many of whom cannot communicate using conventional language.

The project will expand on a successful pilot scheme, which helps disadvantaged young people to develop their own service by learning the skills they need to become more independent and take more control over their lives. These young people will play a major role in training support workers, who in return, will help them take part in ordinary, everyday activities, such as cinema trips, eating out, attending pop concerts and football games, giving many their first opportunity for independence from their families.

Dr Christine Barton of ILS said ‘ILS is both stunned and delighted. It is only once in a lifetime that something this good happens. It is also a tremendous responsibility to make sure that the money is spent wisely to benefit the most disadvantaged disabled young people in Sheffield. We will now be able to support them in reaching their potential and achieving their right to an independent life’.

Sam Jenkinson, a member of the pilot group, said ‘It’s been an amazing experience. I’ve really enjoyed it and I’ve made some great friends. It’s helped us to think for ourselves’.

Please look at the page 'Young Disabled People' for further updates on the Sympsons project.
