Inclusive Living Sheffield

Who are we? . . .

Partners for Inclusion (PfI) is a partnership between Inclusive Living Sheffield (ILS), Sheffield City Council, Sheffield Primary Care Trust, Sheffielf First for Health, the Sheffield Hopsital Trusts and disabled people in Sheffield.

What do we do? . . .

PfI is working to improve services across Sheffield for everyone with a physical, sensory or cognitive impairment by looking at which services work well and what needs improving.

To achieve this we regularly consult with disabled people in Sheffield on local and national issues.

Achievements in the past . . .

In December 2006 our work was recognised with a national award - the Community Care Award for promoting independent living.  As well as recongition for the work PfI has done, and an engraved trophy, the award also included a £5,000 prize for PfI to continue to do imaginative and innovative work in promoting independing living for disabled people.  Core Executive members of PfI attended the awards ceremony at the Marriott Hotel, Grosvenor Square, London.  Everyone involved in PfI is extremely pleased with the award, and the recognition.

Wanted ! ! !   Volunteers to join Partners for Inclusion Core Executive

Pf I exists as a planning partnership within the Sheffield First partnership structure to promote discussions about improving services and experiences of disabled people who may have physical, sensory or cognitive disability. It is a partnership with equality at the heart of its structure, with disabled people having equal numbers of places alongside statutory and voluntary sector members, to form the Core Executive Group.

The Partnership aims to:

  • Identify the issues that disabled people face in Sheffield when accessing services
  • Promote a broader understanding of the social model of disability to service providers
  • Promote better awareness of barriers to living full and active lives faced by many disabled people with a wide range of conditions
  • Give opportunity for dialogue with disabled people across a range of services, issues and organisations
  • Influence improvements to services over time to promote social inclusion
  • Assist with local interpretation of government guidance about improving services for disabled people

We have vacancies for disabled members to join the Pf I Core Executive, and are looking for people who meet the following criteria:

  • Meet the time commitment for members – maximum of 2 meetings per month
  • Contribute to Core Executive meetings
  • Understand how barriers in society can cause disability
  • Propose how services can change to help to reduce barriers
  • Communicate effectively both with other Core Executive members and with a wide range of organisations and people with physical, cognitive or sensory impairment
  • Network with service users and providers to seek opinions and views
  • Work constructively and objectively to contribute to progress
  • Act as an ambassador for the Pf I Partnership
  • Participate in broader Pf I Partnership network events

Selection

People wishing to apply to be members of the Pf I Core Executive should make a written application via Inclusive Living Sheffield.  The letter should demonstrate how you meet the above criteria and what skills and attributes you would bring to the Core Executive. Those who are interested, but feel they do not fully meet the criteria, should still contact Pf I as it may be possible to provide development and mentoring. A panel of existing members of the Core Executive will consider applications.

Remuneration will only be paid to disabled people who are appointed members of the Core Executive and who are not representing their employing organisation. All travel expenses will be met following receipt of appropriate claim forms and receipts, plus a fee per meeting.
