Have Your SayILS has been directly involved with a number of consultations, meetings and events on issues (local and national) affecting disabled people (see below). However we often receive news from others about consultations, or new initiatives, or training, which might be of interest to disabled people in Sheffield, though ILS is not directly involved. Those sending information to us include national bodies such as the Disability Rights Commission, or government departments such as the Department for Transport. Or it may be bodies in Sheffield such as Sheffield City Council, or Sheffield Primary Care Trust, or one of the many voluntary sector organisations in Sheffield. Where appropriate, we will post news on this page (with appropriate links), from other organisations.

The Right to Control is a new right for disabled people. It aims to give you greater choice and control over the support you receive. If you would like to attend this important consultation event please contact Joanne Armitage on 0114 2536750 or e.mail righttocontrol@inclusivesheffield.org.uk
Transport and personal support costs will be met for disabled attendees only. New Intermediate Care Unit Intermediate Care is a new initiative from NHS Sheffield which aims to:
One of the ways NHS Sheffield will achieve this is by building a new Intermediate Care unity in the City. This unit will be a medical facility where post-surgical patients can recover and people with medium term rehabiliationi or medical care needs can stay. (A sort of halfway home between hospitalisation and full independent living in your own home.) Perhaps at some point in the future you may even need to use this facility. Your views are important to NHS Sheffield and we are inviting our friends and members to contribute to the design of the new unit. If you would like to participate in the design and comment on the plans please contact Joanne on 0114 2536750 or e.mail by Friday 4 September. Venue: The Circle, Rockingham Lane, Sheffield Date: Wednesday 16 September, 10.30 am - 12.00 Community Health Champions Community Health Champions are volunteers whose role is to support people in Sheffield's least healthy communities to improve their physical health and mental well-being. Althougha about 40 volunteers have been recruited, no disabled people have applied and we wondered whether there are any particular reasons for this. We would also like to promote the programme amongst disabled people (either as volunteers or someone who is being supported) and are inviting members to participate in a meeting with Nigel West, Community Champions Health Network Co-ordinator, to give disabled people the opportunity to raise any concerns they may have about being a volunteer or who want to find out more about the programme. If its something you may be interested in please contact Joanne by 28th August on 0114 2536750 or e.mail joanne@inclusivesheffield.org.uk ILS and Consultations ILS has a responsibility to help ensure disabled people's voices are heard. To that end, we have undertaken consultation directly with disabled people, and will continue to do so. Most public bodies have a legal duty to consult with disabled people. Whenever a new service is being developed, or an existing service is reviewing its practice, ILS would encourage the service provider to seek the opinion of those using that service. This is often referred to as a stakeholder event. This is where you, as a customer or service user, have your say about any proposed ideas before they are put into practice. ILS has been commissioned to facilitate consultations, and also worked alongside other organisations, or statutory bodies, on other consultations. Below are some of the consultations with which ILS has been involved: Disability Equality DutyIn October 2006 ILS was commissioned by Sheffield City Council to consult with disabled people in Sheffield, on the Council’s Disability Equality Scheme. A number of meetings were held, some targeting specific groups, and all participants were invited to attend a launch event on 12 December. ILS was also involved in consultation with/on behalf of Sheffield Primary Care Trust, and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals foundation Trust, on their Disability Equality Schemes. Consultation on Department of Health Green Paper On 11 July 2005 Inclusive Living Sheffield, along with Partners for Inclusion, organised an event at Sheffield Town Hall. This was a consultation event on the Department of Health Green Paper on Adult Social Care ('Independence Well-Being and Choice: the future for social care for adults in England') - an opportunity for disabled people to discuss this Green Paper and respond to the consultation questions. Consultation on 'Improving the life chances of disabled people' In 2004 ILS worked with the Disabled People's Forum to consult with disabled people on the publication from the Prime Minister's Strategy Unit: Improving the Life Chances of Disabled People. An event was held at Sheffield Town Hall, which gave over 40 people a chance to have their say. Consultation on Direct Payments In 2004 ILS also hosted a successful 'Direct Payments' consultation event with Derbyshire Coalition for Inclusive Living regarding the establishment of a 'Local Implementation Group' for people who receive a Direct Payment. |
