Volunteering provides an opportunity for people to use and develop their skills, a route to employment and a chance to support Voluntary Community Service (VCS) organisations. Volunteers are not an alternative to paid workers but can contribute significantly to the work of an organisation. Without support from volunteers, many VCS organisations would struggle to meet the needs of their constituent communities. Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Trust - Volunteers Sheffield Teaching Hospital Trust (STHT) works with more than 1500 volunteers and has developed effective recruitment and support systems. Two volunteer coordinators are in post, one of whom is seeking to increase the number of young people who volunteer with STHT. In 2005, ILS facilitated an initial meeting between ILS, STHT and BME communities. It was agreed that we would try to work together to identify volunteering opportunities for disabled people, and those from BME communities. If you are interested in doing some voluntary work with the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Trust you can email volunteer@sth.nhs.uk. Volunteer opportunities for ILS members ILS has a volunteer policy and, to gain the maximum benefit for both ILS, and members, we are looking at identifying volunteering opportunities, within ILS. Volunteers would be supervised, and would have an appropriate working space and equipment. Requests for any reasonable adjustments would be discussed with potential volunteers.
