Volunteering

Volunteers are underrepresented in some groups that go to make up Sheffield 's community. These groups include:

  • Young People
  • Disabled People
  • People from black and minority ethnic (BME) communities

Volunteering provides an opportunity for people to use and develop their skills, a route to employment and a chance to support Voluntary Community Service (VCS) organisations.

Volunteers are not an alternative to paid workers but can contribute significantly to the work of an organisation.

Without support from volunteers, many VCS organisations would struggle to meet the needs of their constituent communities. The Year of the Volunteer provides an impetus for organisations to work together to increase volunteering opportunities and people to fill them.

Sheffield Teaching Hospital Trust (STHT) works with more than 1500 volunteers and has developed effective recruitment and support systems. Two volunteer coordinators are in post, one of whom is seeking to increase the number of young people who volunteer with STHT.

An initial meeting with STHT and BME communities has been held. It was agreed that these organisations would work together to identify volunteering opportunities for disabled people and those from BME communities.

Inclusive Living Sheffield will be pleased to offer opportunities for volunteering to its members.

ILS has a volunteer policy and, to gain the maximum benefit for both ILS, and members, we will identify volunteering opportunities with appropriate job descriptions. Volunteers will be supervised, and have an appropriate working space and equipment.

Requests for any reasonable adjustments will be discussed with potential volunteers.
